CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. —

Update 2 p.m.: According to GDOT, the backups have cleared.

Update 11:40 a.m.: According to the City of Hardeeville, drivers should avoid I-95S south of exit 5.

Officials say I-95S in the area will be closed temporarily due to the crash in Georgia.

An earlier incident on the northbound side has damaged a large overhead message board, affecting the southbound lanes. As a result, GDOT and other Georgia state agencies are rerouting traffic through the Georgia Welcome Center.

No southbound traffic can currently exit at Exit 5. Residents in the area should expect significant delays as traffic congestion is building and extending into South Carolina.

Update 10:20 a.m.: Heavy traffic backup remains in the area.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, backup due to the crash, which occurred around 1:20 a.m., will not be resolved until 11 a.m.

The backup is on I-95S before SR 21/Augusta Road. The left lane is blocked.

Update 5 a.m.: Emergency crews have been able to open some lanes on I-95. Traffic is still moving slowly as they work to remove the tractor-trailer from the median. WJCL 22 is hearing reports the driver has has been freed from the truck.

Initial report: All northbound lanes of Interstate 95 are currently blocked at mile marker 110, just past Highway 21 and Augusta Road, due to a significant crash involving a tractor-trailer.

The incident, which occurred around 1:00 AM Tuesday, involves a tractor-trailer that has veered into the median. Emergency responders from Chatham County are on the scene, actively working to clear the area and re-open the lanes as quickly and safely as possible.

The driver of the tractor-trailer has reportedly been stuck for several hours following the crash. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes and expect significant delays in the area.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A Georgia community is asking for prayers and support for the family of a 2-year-old who was stung by yellow jackets more than 150 times.

An online fundraiser was launched for 2-year-old Beckham Reed and his family during this difficult time.

According to the GoFundMe page, the toddler was on his electric toy vehicle when he hit a yellow jacket nest and was swarmed head to toe.

His father grabbed him and rushed him to safety while also getting stung, the fundraiser stated.

Beckham's parents rushed him to the emergency room, where he was sent home after being given medications because his breathing was fine, but less than 24 hours later, his condition was not getting better.

Beckham began to turn yellow, prompting his parents to send him to another emergency room at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. According to the online fundraiser, the emergency room in Brunswick recognized he had multi-organ failure, including his heart, liver and his one working kidney. The 2-year-old was then transferred to the ICU in Savannah.

Memorial Savannah then started Beckham on dialysis, a ventilator, and other life-saving medications to save his life and get the toxins out of his body, the online fundraiser added.

In an update posted on Tuesday, Beckham has fluid around his lungs due to his kidneys not functioning fully.

His family is grateful for the nurses at Memorial Savannah and is thankful that they have been able to hear his voice and see him smile.

The online fundraiser has reached more than $85,000 out of the $90,000 goal.

A GoFundMe set up by a family member said Beckham Reed was riding his electric toy side-by-side with his cousins on June 24 when he hit a yellowjacket nest and was swarmed by the insects. Beckham was stung more than 150 times over his whole body.

Yellowjackets are very aggressive, stinging wasps. They tend to nest close to the ground and will defend their nests if disturbed, according to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program (UC IPM).

According to the GoFundMe, the toddler's parents, Mariah and Peyton, took him to the emergency room after his dad, Peyton, rescued him from the yellowjackets, where he was given Benadryl and morphine and sent home.

Less than a day later, Beckham began turning yellow, so his parents rushed him back to the hospital, the GoFundMe said.

At the hospital, doctors said Beckham's heart, liver and kidney were failing, and he was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit at a hospital in Savannah.

Beckham was only born with one working kidney, the GoFundMe said.

The GoFundMe said Beckham was quickly put on a ventilator, kidney dialysis machine and life-saving IV medications.

When the yellowjackets stung him, they deposited an excessive amount of venom into his body, which couldn't handle it, the GoFundMe said.

There is no specific antivenom for yellowjacket stings, and multi-sting events such as this one can cause much more serious issues than just an allergic reaction.

According to UC IPM, destructive enzymes in wasp venom can cause significant health problems and aren't always recognized by health professionals.

Since the stings, Beckham has remained in the hospital.

"We have been waiting, watching and praying over his kidney numbers," the fundraiser said.

Per the GoFundMe's last update on Tuesday, Beckham was off of the ventilator, but his kidney levels were still high.

"We are thankful for the positives such as Mariah being able to hold him, hearing his voice again, seeing his smirk and personality coming back," the update said.

His parents rushed him to a nearby emergency room, where doctors treated him for more than 150 stings and sent him home with morphine and Benadryl, saying his breathing appeared stable.

Less than 24 hours later, Beckham’s condition rapidly deteriorated, according to his family. His skin turned yellow, and his parents rushed him to Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. There, doctors recognized Beckham was in multi-organ failure—including his heart, liver, and kidneys.

The toddler was immediately transferred to the Pediatric ICU at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where a specialized team began dialysis, ventilator support, and life-saving IV treatments to help his body remove the massive amount of venom it had absorbed.

There is no antivenom for yellowjacket stings, and doctors can only provide supportive care while the toxins work their way out of the young boy's system.
