OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — After multiple people were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning during a block party in the Scarboro community of Oak Ridge, neighbors are sharing their thoughts.
The District Attorney General's Office for Tennessee's 7th Judicial District said that hundreds of people were gathered in the area of S. Benedict drive when the shooting happened.
One neighbor said he had just broken up a fight when the gunfire started.
He said he could hear the bullets flying past his head, hitting his car, and that "never in my life (have I) heard so many shots."
People who live in the area said they believe the shooting is gang related, but that has yet to be confirmed by the DA's office or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Scarboro community member Rose Weaver expressed her concerns over the shooting, and how it effects the community's reputation.
"We're concerned in terms of the reputation, being a historical community, that incident has on it and that's just not the Scarboro community," Weaver said.
She also said she wants people to be able to come to the community, but that they need to respect the community they're in.
"You're hopeful that when people come in to the community, that they have respect... Respect of property, respect of lives," she said. "We want to send a message out that, come in to the community, support the programs and the activities, but don't try to destroy the community itself."
There are multiple people in the hospital with injuries related to the shooting, although the DA's office has not made it clear how many people were injured.

The plan hasn’t been updated in more than 30 years, it’s time to get ahead of city growth
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) - We all know East Tennessee is growing quickly.
Now, the City of Oak Ridge is looking for feedback from the community on how to manage that growth.
The city is looking to update its plan, and residents had the chance to chime in Monday night.
The current plan hasn’t been updated in 37 years.
The Planning and Development Director Wayne Blasius said now is the time to get ahead of the growth so it can benefit the community without straining city infrastructure.
“It seems in the last five years there’s been a lot of growth and change in Oak Ridge,” Jeff Gilpin, a resident of Oak Ridge for 30 years, said.
Gilpin said he loves the Secret City, but change is happening quickly, and it needs to be managed.
That’s exactly the goal as city officials work to update the 1988 comprehensive plan.
“Up until this point, we’ve been primarily focused on public input, just like this meeting today, to ask people what they liked to see,” Blasius said.
Blasius said the new comprehensive plan will last for the next 20 years.
It will be used as a decision making tool for any future projects for the whole city, like neighborhood planning, transportation and infrastructure, and redevelopment.
There are 5 specific areas that will get some extra attention:
“We think there’s more likelihood to see something different, something changing in these areas versus some others that might be some of the same,” Balsius said.
People gathered at Hops and Hounds Oak Ridge to share their thoughts of what needs to change in the area.
“I would like to see more connectivity in all parts of Oak Ridge with pedestrian, bicycle and non-motorized transportation of sorts,” Gilpin said. “And that might include you know buses and other things like that to make it more easier for people to get around.”
Some people had specific ideas for the Warehouse/Belgrade Roads area, like bringing in more small business.
“Some antique shops, some consignment shops, some coffee shops,” said Anne Dorso. “So those of us that walk the neighborhood and there’s a lot of us, can have a cup of coffee right after a walk.”
Alexia Stewart with the City of Oak Ridge said they’re looking for get more feedback from young entrepreneurs.
Many want to see more walk ability, accessibility and a rooftop bar.
“Every single survey gets read, every single comment gets read, every single point map point that someone puts out gets put on the map,” Stewart said. “We really do care about people’s opinions and we want to hear them.”
There’s still a long way to go before this updated comprehensive plan is finalized.
This process started last fall. This summer, the city will look over the community feedback to create drafted plans.
In August, there’ll be more meetings for the public to give feedback on those drafts.
Blasius hopes to have a new comprehensive plan adopted by the city by next year.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., June 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Orano USA and more than 100 federal, state, business, and regional leaders recently marked a major milestone for Project IKE, the company's development of America's new multibillion-dollar uranium enrichment facility, with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting opening the company's office in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Project IKE, the single largest investment in Tennessee's history, will advance America's low carbon energy future by producing enriched uranium to power today's nuclear reactors and next-generation designs, bolstering U.S. energy independence and national security.
"Oak Ridge is where history meets the future," said Jean-Luc Palayer, CEO of Orano USA. "Today, we stand on historic ground—where American ingenuity first unlocked the power of the atom. The event included speeches marking the milestone by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, Congressman Chuck Fleischmann, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter, State Senator Ken Yager, and Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch.
The enrichment facility's development is in line with President Trump's recent executive orders regarding nuclear energy, which are intended to revitalize and expand the U.S. nuclear industry, aiming to quadruple nuclear electricity production by 2050.
"The announcement of a major global enrichment company opening its office in Oak Ridge, paired with President Trump's strong movement forward in nuclear energy, is about to change the world and change the world for the better," Governor Lee said. "Tennessee will lead this change."
Palayer emphasized that applying Orano's 60 years of nuclear expertise in America and its proven centrifuge technology can enable a quicker ramp up for production of advanced nuclear fuels, including high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) and low-enriched uranium (LEU/LEU+).
"America needs new nuclear power," said Palayer. "The world needs new nuclear power. And new nuclear power needs Tennessee and Project IKE in Oak Ridge."
Located less than 10 miles from Orano's selected Project IKE site near the Oak Ridge Horizon Center Industrial Park, this first group of office employees, including engineers, project managers, and licensing personnel, is in addition to the 300-person workforce expected to operate Orano's uranium enrichment facility.
The new Oak Ridge office joins Orano's 15 other sites in the United States including manufacturing facilities in North Carolina, canister operations in Kentucky, nuclear medicine research in Texas, and headquarters in Maryland.
Later this year, Orano is celebrating 60 years in the United States as one of the longest operating nuclear energy companies in the nation. For more than 40 years, Orano has reliably produced and supplied American reactors with enriched uranium. Orano's planned uranium enrichment center in Oak Ridge is designed as a multi-structure commercial production site covering approximately 750,000 square feet, making it one of the largest in America.
Depending on federal funding and customers' support, the facility will produce LEU/LEU+ to fuel existing commercial nuclear energy reactors and, potentially, HALEU to help develop and power advanced reactors.
Orano has already taken active steps to support the American market and foster energy independence by launching a 30% uranium enrichment capacity expansion at its operating Georges Besse 2 facility in France.

The Scarboro Community Alumni Association 2025 Biennial Reunion will take place June 6-8. It also will serve as a celebration of history, with the Scarboro 85 Monument partially funded. Francil Sheila Gibson will speak at the scholarship banquet on “Where Do We Go From Here?” at 6 p.m. June 6 at Calhoun’s Event Center, 100 Melton Lake Peninsula in Oak Ridge. The Oak Ridge native works for Healthcare Corporation of America in the Information and Technology Services Group as assistant vice president of acquisitions, new constructions and divestitures, and is the chair of the ITG Culture and Values Council.
Gibson is an advocate for athletics and supporting women, with a passion for mentoring and guiding young leaders.

Unity Parade
Bands, organizations, city and county offices, churches, car caravans, businesses, fraternities and sororities, motorcyclists and more will be represented in the Unity Parade on June 7. Participants are still needed. Lineups start at 8:30 a.m. at Grey Strang Baseball Complex on Wilberforce Avenue for the 9 a.m. parade. The parade route will start from the baseball field, then go left on Benedict, right on Dillard and left on Wilberforce Avenue, ending at Mount Zion Baptist Church.
The streets on Carver will be blocked for the 10 a.m. Fun Day event on June 7. To participate, call Rose Weaver or email rs_wvr@yahoo.com.

There will also be food, clothing and resource information vendors, temporary tattooing, face painting, water splashing by the Oak Ridge Fire Department, a bounce house and other events for youth.
The reunion will end June 8 with community worship at Oak Valley Baptist Church, Hampton Road.
