Understanding the Importance of Testosterone in Your Body

head-bottom

When people hear the word "testosterone," they often associate it with overly aggressive or macho men. However, testosterone really has little impact on a man's masculinity, at least from a social standpoint. Rather, testosterone plays a much more important role in male development, from puberty to the end of life.

As the primary androgen, testosterone helps men develop typical male characteristics and is vital for the production of sperm. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the body control testosterone, and it helps men develop and maintain various functions such as:

What Causes Low Testosterone?

head-bottom

As men age, they may experience lower levels of testosterone, also known as low T. This natural decline in testosterone can also be caused by drug abuse, obesity, prescribed medications, or testicle injuries. When testosterone levels decrease, it can affect the body's balance of testosterone and estrogen, leading to an increase in abdominal fat and higher levels of estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of issues that, when left untreated, can affect your quality of life in several ways.

The most common low testosterone signs in males include the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction or ED
  • Increased Amounts of Body Fat
  • Lack of Concentration
  • More Irritability
  • Low Libido
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in Muscle Mass
  • Lack of Motivation

If one or more of those symptoms are happening in your life right now, it could be because your body has a lack of testosterone. The only way to find out for certain is to have your testosterone levels tested at a qualified a qualified clinic/provider, such as Interstate Health Near Pooler. If testing shows that you have low T, the next step in your recovery could be Bio-identical testosterone replacement Near Pooler, GA.

The Risks of Living Life with Low Testosterone

head-bottom

Some men may think to themselves, "I don't have the time or patience to undergo Bio-identical testosterone replacement Near Pooler, GA." While Bio-identical testosterone replacement treatments are quick, easy, and require no recovery time, we at Interstate Health Near Pooler understand that this type of therapy is not for everyone. Some men choose to rough it through this stage in their life, despite available solutions. While that is certainly an option, if you're considering this route, you should know that more is at risk than low libido and lack of motivation.

As frustrating as those symptoms can be, living with low testosterone often results in more serious issues that risk the health of your vital organs. If you're on the fence about bringing your testosterone levels back within normal range, keep these health risks in mind.

Diabetes

Diabetes

For those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, it's possible that low testosterone levels could be a factor. Research has shown that men with low testosterone are more likely to develop diabetes as they age, and those with diabetes are also more likely to have low testosterone. Additionally, men with low T may struggle with insulin resistance. While testosterone replacement therapy won't cure diabetes, studies have suggested that men with healthy testosterone levels tend to have better blood sugar levels and a lower risk of obesity.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

If a doctor has informed you that you have high blood pressure, you may be curious about its root cause. Could it be due to aging? Is it hereditary? Or is there another factor at play? Research has shown that men who have low levels of testosterone are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. When testosterone levels are low, red blood cell production is hindered, which can speed up the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Over time, this plaque buildup can result in severe issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Many men face the challenge of excess body fat as they age, which can be discouraging when you're trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, stubborn fat around the waistline can be difficult to get rid of. However, it's important to note that low testosterone levels may be the underlying cause. Studies have shown a correlation between low T and obesity, as testosterone helps regulate metabolism by controlling insulin, glucose, and fat. The good news is that undergoing Bio-identical testosterone replacement in combination with proper diet and exercise can lead to weight loss and improved blood glucose and low-density cholesterol levels.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body lacks or has dysfunctional red blood cells, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to organs. Men with low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of anemia since testosterone plays a role in healthy red blood cell production. A study conducted in 2009 revealed that older men with low T have five times more chances of being anemic compared to men with normal testosterone levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy (Bio-identical testosterone replacement) is not a cure for anemia, it can help in the production of more red blood cells, which may prevent anemia.

Bio-identical testosterone replacement works by restoring a healthy testosterone level in men who suffer from low T. The body lacks sufficient production of an essential hormone, and so requires an exogenous source to replace it - testosterone in this case. Although most men begin Bio-identical testosterone replacement after the age of 50, more men in their 30s and 40s are having their testosterone levels tested at wellness clinics like Interstate Health Near Pooler. POOLER, Ga. (WTOC) - More and more people are moving to Pooler and western Chatham County, and the need for increased medical care in that area only continues to grow.

Expanding healthcare in Pooler has been the topic of ongoing legal challenges since 2020.

Both Memorial Health and St. Joseph’s/Candler have differing views on the best way to move forward to serve people in the county.

“The residents have spoken, the need is there, so let’s make it happen,” said Pooler Mayor Karen Williams.

Mayor Williams says the area is ready for some form of emergency care closer to home.

“Frankly, it would save lives. It would save lives. That’s my goal, is to save the lives of the Pooler residents. That’s what it comes down to, and I’m going to continue to fight for it,” said Williams.

In order for that process to happen, Memorial Health or St. Joseph’s/Candler must be granted a certificate of need, known as a CON, from the state.

In 2020, the state granted Memorial Health a CON to build a free-standing Emergency Department near Pooler Parkway and Blue Moon Crossing.

Since then, it’s been tied up with appeals from other hospital organizations, including St. Joseph’s, preventing construction.

A Chatham County judge ruled in favor of Memorial, but the appeal is now being presented to the Georgia Supreme Court.

“The moment we get free and clear approval, and we’re respectful of the legal process, I do want to make sure I say that. I would say within 14 to 18 months depending on weather and construction schedules, we’d be open and ready to go,” said Brad Talbert, Memorial Health CEO.

A free-standing Emergency Department is a fully functional emergency room, but without inpatient services.

Patients would still travel or be taken into Savannah if they needed to be admitted.

“Last year alone, over 14,000 Pooler residents received ER care here on our main campus. But think about how accessing that care more quickly, time matters in an emergency,” said Talbert.

Meanwhile, St. Joseph’s Candler is looking to expand their Pooler campus located on Pooler Parkway.

The facility already offers outpatient surgery, primary care and urgent care.

The new expansion would add more types of care and beds for patients who need additional attention.

The health system’s CEO Paul Hinchey says they’re taking a more gradual approach to expansion.

“Healthcare in these locations is not going to stay still. We don’t want to rip anything out that we’ve built. We just want it to fit together like a big Lego, which is exactly the way it will work,” said Paul Hinchey, St. Joseph’s Candler CEO.

Hinchey says they hope to have their expansion operational by late 2027.

He says eventually, another phase will include an emergency department, but that need will develop over time.

“It’s important to have all of things that go in and care for a patient. Some are expected, most are unexpected. We don’t want them to have to hop in a car and go somewhere else. That’s the model we’re building there. It’ll be phased in as the population grows, and we’ll see what the need is,” said Hinchey.

Meanwhile, Mayor Williams says she’ll continue to push for expanded medical care in her city.

“I have to, as the mayor of this thriving city, I have to advocate for my residents. I don’t want my residents to not have the medical services and providers we need in this city, so I’m not going to stop,” said Williams.

A state supreme court hearing for the challenge to Memorial Health’s certificate of need not been scheduled.

Both health providers say they also have plans for expansion into Bryan County.

At long last, the convenience store chain with a cult following is holding its grand opening in Pooler this month.

Doors will open at 8 a.m., while the ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Director of Store Operations Nancy Dulaney said in a press release, “We look forward to continuing to bring our unique brand of fresh food, beverages and convenience to new areas and to further our commitment to providing the community with not only a new level of convenience but a strong, committed community partner.”

The store broke ground in May 2024 at the intersection of Pooler Parkway and Pine Barren Road after being approved by Pooler City Council in February. Wawa opened its stores in Georgia in 2024 in Bainbridge, Brunswick and Jesup.

This year, the franchise plans to open five to six more stores before year end. Over the next five to eight years, Wawa plans to build and open more than 26 stores in Georgia, at the pace of around three to four stores per year, the press release said.

Wawa offers specialty beverages, grocery store foods, made-to-order meals, snacks and desserts that have earned it an impassioned following. Mayor Karen Williams said in an interview last May that she was thrilled the convenience store was coming to Pooler.

"I feel their stay in Pooler will be a remarkable one, and that the community will find them to be an asset just as I do," Williams said. "I congratulate them on coming to Pooler and look forward to future endeavors."
