RICHMOND HILL, Ga. —
RICHMOND HILL, Ga. — Dozens of people gathered at J.F. Gregory Park in Richmond Hill to observe Memorial Day and pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States.
The solemn ceremony, steeped in tradition and patriotism, offered a moment for the community to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made by America’s fallen heroes.
"Memorial Day began in the aftermath of the Civil War," said Vietnam War veteran Joseph Zakrzewski, "I always come to every ceremony, no matter where we're at ... to honor, respect my fallen brothers and sisters and to pay tribute to them for making the ultimate sacrifice."
The air grew still during the poignant 21-gun salute, followed by the echo of taps, a moment that brought many in attendance to quiet reflection.
Mayor Russ Carpenter spoke about the deep military roots in the Richmond Hill community.
"There’s a lot of military residents here, a lot of retired military residents. And we understand what it is to lose someone," he said. "What Memorial Day signifies is the fallen heroes that we've lost, that paid the price — the ultimate price — for our freedom."
The ceremony served not only as a tribute but also as a reminder of the sacrifices that form the foundation of American liberty.
"I think it's fantastic. I think everybody should remember our veterans, our military and those that went before us," said another attendee.
The event closed with a final note of pride and gratitude as the last strains of taps drifted through the park.
"I'm always very prideful that we have a community that turns out to pay respect to our veterans," said one participant. "It was a great tribute."
As families quietly departed, the echoes of remembrance lingered — a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom and the community's enduring commitment to honor it.

RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WTOC) - An immersive and innovative new experience park is in the works in Richmond Hill and the designers say it will be the first-of-its-kind anywhere in the United States.
The FREN Lab Experience Park will be a $27 million dollar indoor-outdoor family space, with interactive technology, educational opportunities and even a spot to grab a meal.
“It’s a place that’s going to redefine the future of recreation and community engagement,” FREN Foundation President Stephen Nottingham said.
The 22-acre park will sit just off the Great Ogeechee Parkway, across from the first phase of homes in the Heartwood development. The plans call for 47,000 square feet of interactive space indoors, blending traditional play with modern technology. This includes a corridor lined with an interactive LED wall and a virtual sandbox to give the perception of playing in different environments without leaving the room.
“It’s really about transformative adventures through this experiential space,” Nottingham said. “The flexibility will give us and permit us to constantly adapt and change towards different areas of focus.”
The FREN team is already in this space on a smaller level. The team designed a healing garden at the Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah and created the interactive Telfair Children’s Museum of Art two years ago, rolling out an updated on May 9. This new park will be a major step forward.
“There has to be an initiative towards progress and that’s what our team’s effort represents,” Nottingham said.
The FREN Lab Experience Park will also include an outdoor area with playgrounds for older and younger children, a mini-golf course and a splash pad complete with music and lighting.
“Projects like this are really encouraging,” Richmond Hill businessman John Reynolds said. “This isn’t just another home being built, but this is something for the homes that are built here; something for those families to do.”
Bryan County is the fastest growing county in Georgia and keeps getting bigger. More than 7,000 school-aged children now call Richmond Hill home. Neighborhoods like Heartwood are fueling that growth, but keeping up becomes the new challenge.
“This is going to add so much value to this community,” Richmond Hill Mayor Pro-Tem Kristi Cox said. “I mean next to people asking for a Chick-fil-A, people are always asking for things for our kids.”
Nottingham says they plan on offering annual memberships that would be close to $30 per month.
The idea is still in its infancy. The FREN Foundation approaching donors and sponsors now, but Nottingham says the goal is to break ground within a year and open in 2028.

BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. —
A groundbreaking — and controversial — move by the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office is catching drivers' attention, literally from above.
The department has started using drones during traffic stops, targeting drivers who are texting or not wearing seatbelts. The technology is meant to enhance deputy safety and improve enforcement, but it’s also raising serious privacy concerns.
Ever been caught without a seatbelt? Texting behind the wheel?
That’s what happened to Audriana Davis, who had just left a Dollar General in Richmond Hill when she was pulled over.
"I just thought it was crazy. I've never even seen anything like that," she said.
At first, Davis wasn’t sure why she had been stopped.
"I was just like, oh my God, what did I do? He was like, 'Hey, is there a reason — you don't have your seat belt on?" David said.
But she quickly realized she’d been watched the entire time — from above.
"He brought the drone down. And I was like, 'That's how you caught me?' And he was like, 'Yeah,'" she said.
The Bryan County Sheriff’s Office said one deputy surveys an area with the drone to spot traffic violations, and then deploys another deputy to conduct the traffic stop.
"You can see the person sitting in the car, see the person without the seatbelt on, take a still photograph or a video, and then pull them over and say, hey, you didn't have your seatbelt on," Bryan County Sheriff Mark Crowe.
Currently, the technology is only being used to enforce laws against texting while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
Crowe said the drones can zoom in so far, they can even see text messages on people's phones.
That level of surveillance is exactly what some civil liberties advocates are worried about. But the Sheriff’s Office says the use is legal — and backed by local prosecutors.
"They ran it before our state court solicitor and said, 'Hey, if we use the drone for this purpose and we do this with it, would you be able to prosecute cases on that?'" Crowe said."And the solicitor told him absolutely."
Davis admits the experience was unsettling — but eye-opening.
"Listen, I don't even pull out of my driveway without putting my seatbelt on, they got me," Davis said.
The sheriff’s office hopes its drone program will serve as a model for other agencies across the state. They’re also collecting drone footage and traffic violation data to share with state officials.
