STATESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Statesboro High School teacher has been selected to serve as president of the Georgia Business Education Association for 2027-2028, Bulloch Schools announced on social media.
According to the post, Melissa Anderson, a Workforce Ready teacher at Statesboro High, has been an active member of the association for 10 years. The district said the organization’s membership chose her to lead the state association, and she will serve as president-elect during the 2026-2027 school year in preparation for the leadership role.
Bulloch Schools said Anderson has previously served as the organization’s public relations officer and has been a frequent presenter at its conferences and events.
Anderson has 21 years of teaching experience, all at Statesboro High School. The post states she holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Education from Georgia Southern University and a master’s degree in Adult and Career Education from Valdosta State University.
The district said that for 18 years, Anderson taught Business & Finance courses in Statesboro High’s Financial Services career pathway, and has brought many of those concepts and real-world applications to her current classroom role teaching Workforce Ready skills.
According to Bulloch Schools, Anderson enjoys presenting in a variety of settings and creating practical, engaging resources for both students and educators. The Georgia Southern Eagles had a nice win on the road at Coastal Carolina Saturday night to open up Sun Belt Conference play.
But there’s not much time to enjoy that victory, because the defending conference champions, the James Madison Dukes, pay a visit to Paulson Stadium this weekend.
The Georgia Southern Eagles are flying high after opening up their Sun Belt Conference slate with a 31-24 win over Coastal Carolina this past Saturday night in Conway, South Carolina.
And while that win is certainly nice, their road to a conference title gets considerably tougher this weekend as defending champion and unbeaten James Madison comes to Statesboro and Paulson Stadium this Saturday night.
“James Madison, in my opinion, is a top 25 team," said Clay Helton, Georgia Southern head coach. "When I look at them on tape, they looked like a top 25 football team, and they're playing like it right now. I know they got the votes. And, you know, basically every poll that's out there, but they're playing to a top 25 level.”
And the Eagles are glad a contest of this magnitude is being played in Statesboro where they can feed off the "Power of Paulson."
“I know, I’ve only played two games in here so far, but I can feel it every time I step in here," said River Helms, Georgia Southern tight end. "Power of Paulson from the fans and everything around it. I feel like it gives us an edge playing at home, you know. I'm excited about that. I'm excited for everybody on the team.”
“It could be very impactful," said Diego Aviles, Georgia Southern linebacker. "Our crowd means a lot to us. We praise them for everything that they do. For us. Being able to bring that energy gives us motivation to go out there and execute through all four quarters. Don't stop.”
The Eagles and Dukes will get together this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Paulson Stadium and will be nationally televised on ESPNU.

Texas-based franchise operator SOAR QSR has acknowledged operational struggles at its newly acquired Statesboro Sonic locations after months of local complaints.
Both Sonic Drive-In locations in Statesboro changed ownership earlier this year, and in the months since the sale, local customers have raised growing concerns about service, order accuracy, food quality and the overall condition of the restaurants.
The two Statesboro locations were acquired March 8, 2026, by SOAR QSR, a Plano, Texas-based Sonic franchise operator, from longtime Statesboro businessman Russell Rosengart.
Since the ownership change, complaints about both restaurants have become frequent on social media. Customers have described long wait times, incorrect or incomplete orders, inconsistent food quality, customer service concerns and issues involving cleanliness and upkeep of the properties.
SOAR QSR acknowledged the problems in a statement to Grice Connect.
“We recognize that the experience at our Statesboro restaurants has not consistently met the standards we expect. We are actively working with our restaurant teams, with a strong focus on training, operational execution, and delivering the level of service our guests should expect.
“We are committed to getting it right and appreciate the patience and continued support of the Statesboro community,” said Adam Scott, vice president of People Development for SOAR QSR.
A major change for longtime local restaurants
The sale marked the end of more than three decades of Rosengart's direct involvement with Sonic in Statesboro.
Rosengart opened the Sonic on South Main Street in 1992. At the time, it was one of the first new Sonic restaurants to open in Georgia in more than 20 years.
He later opened the Buckhead Drive location in the early 2000s.
Over the years, Rosengart grew his Sonic operation to 15 locations. He continues to own and operate Sonic restaurants elsewhere in southeast Georgia.
Rosengart said SOAR approached him with an opportunity to purchase the two Statesboro restaurants and specifically wanted the locations in this market.
“Operating restaurants that are open seven days a week is definitely a young person's business,” Rosengart said.
Following the acquisition, the local restaurants also experienced significant management turnover, with the existing managers leaving the Statesboro operations.
Rosengart said he has been somewhat surprised by the operational difficulties since the transition but believes the new ownership group is going through a rebuilding process that will require establishing stable management and staffing.
“It is very unfortunate that they are experiencing these challenges,” Rosengart said. “They are a very successful company and I am certain they will be successful with these two Sonics in the Statesboro market.”
New owner operates hundreds of Sonic restaurants
SOAR QSR was founded in 2020 and specializes exclusively in owning and operating Sonic Drive-In franchises.
The company operates more than 270 Sonic restaurants across more than 20 states, making it one of the nation's largest Sonic franchise operators.
SOAR operates under CMG Companies, a Dallas-area multi-unit investment and operating company with interests in restaurants, hotels and real estate.
The Statesboro acquisition moved two restaurants that had been locally operated for decades into a much larger multi-state restaurant organization.
While customer concerns have continued following the transition, SOAR's statement indicates company leadership is aware of the issues and is working with the Statesboro teams on training, restaurant operations and customer service.
For longtime Statesboro customers who have watched the Sonic restaurants operate under the same local ownership for more than 30 years, the change has been noticeable.
SOAR says its goal now is to stabilize the restaurants and restore the level of service Statesboro customers expect.

STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — A zoning request that would pave the way for a data center in Statesboro is on the planning commission’s Tuesday agenda.
4am Development LCC and Thomas & Hutton petitioned for the almost 27-acre parcel on Burkhalter Road to be rezoned from its current zoning as a high-density residential district to an office and business district.
Surrounding areas are almost entirely residential, according to the Development Services Report. The property is located just within city limits, meaning it’s exempt from Bulloch County’s planned ban on data centers in unincorporated county areas.
The land is proposed to become home to a two-story data center, with the building spanning approximately 115,000 square feet per floor.
“Design details specifically for the Data Center will be reviewed under the special use permit application at a later time,” the Development Services Report said.
The property isn’t serviced by city water, but there is reportedly a nearby 12-inch water main and six-inch sewage line.
The developer has submitted a water management plan that reportedly indicates the data center is projected to need around 12,000 gallons of water per day monthly.
The plan also said the center’s peak demand would sit at 1,000 gallons per day for cooling and domestic use, with 30-100 gallons per day being use for the cooling system.
The center would also use a closed-loop system, which is required after the city council voted to set classifications and requirements for data centers on June 2.
The report noted that there is also an eight inch natural gas main available on Burkhalter Road.
The proposed data center would have one planned access, a 30-foot driveway that circles the building on Burkhalter Road.
Additionally, developers would build a detention pond, which is used to temporarily store stormwater runoff, and a 32,000 feet substation.
There are some wetlands areas on the 26.94-acre lot. Those areas are currently being reviewed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for site impacts, according to the report.
Data centers are not allowed by right in any zoning district following the city’s amended Unified Development Code which created rules and requirements for data centers. All data centers are required to have a special use permit.
Planning commission staff recommended conditional approval, with a condition set that they must dedicate 10 feet of property to the city for “traffic improvements,” according to the report.
The amendment is on the Statesboro Planning Commission’s agenda for Aug. 4.
If approved, the amendment will go in front of city council to grant or deny on Aug. 18.
