1. Wehr Nature Center / Whitnall Park
Tucked inside Whitnall Park, Wehr Nature Center features a peaceful little waterfall where Mallard Lake flows into the Root River. It’s about a ¾-mile walk from the Visitor Center—just long enough to feel like an adventure, but still doable for most kids. Look for turtles sunning on logs and frogs hopping near the water’s edge.

2. Lake Park Waterfall
The lannon stone waterfall in Lake Park was restored in 2010 and has a vertical fall of more than 30 feet, the highest in Southeastern Wisconsin. You can access the Lake Park Waterfall via a path that begins at an overlook just south of the Lake Park Pavilion parking lot. The wooded path leads down to Lincoln Memorial Drive. Be sure to check out the historic North Point Lighthouse while you’re in the park!
Fun fact: Lake Park was designed in the early 1900s by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who was also the architect for Central Park in New York City and the U.S. Capitol grounds.
3. Kletzsch Park Dam
Kletzsch Park in Glendale is home to a beautiful waterfall (officially a dam) located on Milwaukee River Parkway and along the Oak Leaf Trail. They recently built a picturesque fish passageway for migrating fish to more easily get around the dam.
It’s a great stop for a snack or rest, and there are a couple of playgrounds nearby. One is located in Kletzsch Park just north of the waterfall, and another is located at Parkway Elementary School south of the waterfall (not open to the public during school hours). Maslowski Park and playground is also about a five minute drive away.

The North Country Scenic Trail and Lake Superior.
Up for a road trip? The North Country National Scenic Trail delivers some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the United States. It runs through 8 states from Vermont to North Dakota, including northern Wisconsin.
The Western Wisconsin segment runs from the Minnesota/Wisconsin State Line to Bayfield County A. This segment offers mostly flat trails and gentle slopes with some expansive vistas. You’ll see old growth groves of red and white pine trees and in the late summer the prairies are abundant with flowers. There are many streams along this segment and the eastern part of this segment runs along small, pristine lakes.
Along this segment you’ll find Pattison State Park, which features the tallest waterfalls in Wisconsin and fourth highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Big Manitou Falls is 165 feet high (It’s Wisconsin’s largest waterfall) and the smaller falls called Twin Little Manitou Falls, is 31 feet high.
Pattison State Park along the North Country Trail
The oldest section of the Trail in Wisconsin is the Chequamegon National Forest, running from Bayfield County A to the Sandstone Ledges Spur Trail in Copper Falls State Park.
The trails pass through gentle terrain and two federally designated Wilderness Areas: Porcupine Lake Wilderness and Rainbow Lake Wilderness, both popular with visitors.
The Juniper Rock Overlook offers a showstopping view in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, located along the North Country Scenic Trail. It’s rated as moderate to difficult because it is rocky and steep at times. However the hike is only a half a mile, which means it will only take you about 20 minutes to complete. At the end of the hike, you’ll be rewarded panoramic vistas of the Marengo River Valley. If you continue on, you can hike over a bridge over the Marengo River Valley.
The Juniper Rock Overlook in the Chequamegon National Forest
In the Eastern part of the state, the Trail continues through the “land of waterfalls” and rocky outcrops of the ancient, worn down Penokee Mountain Range. This segment of the Trail is more wild and arguably more breathtaking, with expansive vistas.
In this segment, the North Country Trail runs through Copper Falls State Park, a waterfall heaven. The doughboys Nature Trail is a 1.7-mile trail that that offers spectacular views of Copper Falls, Brownstone Falls and the Tyler Forks cascades.
No fees are charged for hiking on the trail but fees may be required for parking, camping, or entrance at various sections along the trail.
You’ll find historic sites along the way with information about the landscape, Native Americans, national historic landmarks and important people. Visit the National Park Service website or the North Country Trail Association to plan your trip.

Severe storms are forecast to pass through Milwaukee the evening of May 15, bringing egg-sized hail and gusty winds to the area.
Storms will develop in the Madison area Thursday afternoon, before moving eastward toward Waukesha County by 6 or 7 p.m., according to Tim Halbach, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan. The severe weather could hit the Milwaukee anytime between 6 and 8 p.m., he said.
"Whenever the storms come through, that's when we should expect the large hail, some high winds and chances for a tornado or two to develop," Halbach said. "Basically all the severe thunderstorm hazards will be possible today."
The greatest tornado risk will be in central Wisconsin, toward Fond Du Lac and further northwest, he added. Milwaukee has a lower tornado risk due to cooler temperatures by the lakefront.
Winds across much of the state will likely reach between 60 mph and 80 mph, and rainfall totals in Milwaukee will likely reach between a quarter and a half inch, Halbach said. Flash flooding is unlikely.
"These storms are going to be moving by pretty quick,," he said, "but with any thunderstorms, you can get some torrential downpours when they come through."
As for the multi-day, dense fog over Milwaukee, the shifting winds from the storm should clear out the lingering fog by end of day, Halbach said. Friday, May 16 will bring more windy weather, with some chances of showers in the afternoon. Rain may linger into May 17 but should clear up by the end of the weekend.

These towering structures have been guiding ships safely to shore for centuries, and they’re also a great place to explore with your little ones.
Back in their heyday, Wisconsin lighthouses served a vital purpose, their beacons protecting and guiding ships along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Today, most of these lighthouse structures are historic places of interest in the badger state. You only need to stand in their shadows to feel like you’ve been instantly transported back to another time.
In this blog post, we’ll be highlighting some of the most picturesque and family-friendly lighthouses in the area.
Whether just down the road or a short day trip away from Milwaukee County, each of the following historic lighthouses has something to offer everyone in the family. Older kids will especially love climbing to the top of a tower to take in some spectacular views.

1. North Point Lighthouse Museum

Built in 1855, the North Point light station can be found in Lake Park and is one of the oldest standing structures in Milwaukee. This historic site has been open for public tours and visits since being restored in 2007.
Climb the 74-foot lighthouse tower for 360-degree views of Lake Park, Lake Michigan and downtown Milwaukee, or tour the Queen Anne-style, wheelchair-accessible museum to view maritime industry artifacts and exhibits.
Children must be at least 5 years old and at least 38 inches tall to climb the tower. There are 84 steps and a ladder to reach the lantern room at the top.
There are guided and self-guided tours, plus a Lunch & Tour option available for larger groups Monday-Thursday.
2. Wind Point Lighthouse – Racine

This active lighthouse is one of the oldest and tallest beacons on the Great Lakes, standing 108 feet tall. It was first lit on November 15, 1880. The park grounds are open year-round from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and they include a beach area, gardens, picnic tables and a memorial brick garden.

The lighthouse hall and south lawn may be rented out for private events.
3. 1860 Light Station Museum – Port Washington

Situated on the north bluff overlooking downtown Port Washington, this historic light station resembles an old school house in design. Built of Cream City brick in 1860, the building features an interior that has been recently gutted and rebuilt to 1860 floor plans.
During your visit, be sure to check out the restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters and the local historical society museum on site. But the true highlight of your tour will be climbing up to the lantern room, an exact replica of the original square tower that was torn down in 1934.
All ages may tour the lighthouse museum, but children must be at least 6 years old to climb the tower. Timed entry tickets may be purchased on Eventbrite.
You can also check out the Art Deco Breakwater Lighthouse in the harbor (pictured below), originally built in 1849 and improved in 1931.

4. Lakeside Park Lighthouse – Fond du Lac

Trust us when we say that the Lakeside Park Lighthouse is worth visiting (and the drive). Built during the Great Depression in 1933, the 40-foot-tall working lighthouse was saved from disrepair in 1967 and restored again in 1993.
The lighthouse has a wooden spiral staircase attached to the interior walls that winds up to the top of the tower. Visitors who climb it all the way to the observation deck are rewarded with incredible views of Lake Winnebago and Lakeside Park.
5. Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse

Built in 1915, this skeletal steel pierhead lighthouse has a rich history. The original lantern room has been removed, but the top of its tower now serves as an NOAA weather station. Though you can’t go inside it, many people enjoy walking the breakwater that leads all the way out to the tower.
The best part? Also in nearby DeLand Park is the remains of the Lottie Cooper, a ship that sunk in 1894. The wreckage of the lumber schooner was discovered in 1990, and an 89-foot section of the ship was salvaged and put on display near the Harbor Centre Marina.
6. Rawley Point – Two Rivers

At 113 feet above lake level, the skeleton iron tower of the Rawley Point Lighthouse is the tallest land-based lighthouse on the Great Lakes. It’s visible to ships up to 19 miles away.
The lighthouse is currently used as a rental cottage for Coast Guard personnel, so it is not open to the public for tours. You can view and photograph it from Point Beach, but you’ll need to first purchase a vehicle admission sticker to gain entrance to Point Beach State Forest.
7. Central Library Lighthouse
Central Library is definitely one of the best Milwaukee libraries, and there’s an adorable lighthouse there for kids to climb!
You’ll find it in the Betty Brinn Children’s room with plenty of cozy reading alcoves, dozen of computers, and special children’s book collections grouped together.
